Ottawa city tour: fourteen listings compared

The phrase covers three different purchases in Ottawa, and they are priced and timed so differently that picking the wrong one is the main way people waste a morning here.

On wheels, privately. The Parliament Hill and river parkway tour is an hour and a half at $85, built around the architecture of the Hill and the parkways along the Ottawa River, with pick-up and drop-off included. The Lansdowne and Bank Street tour at $196 is the same idea further south: Lansdowne Park, The Glebe and Bank Street in two hours, pick-up included, with optional photo or coffee stops.

On foot. Eight listings walk. The embassy and landmark tour covers Notre Dame Cathedral, the embassies of Kuwait, Japan and Saudi Arabia and the Canadian War Museum in three hours at $106. The private historical highlights walk runs from Parliament Hill to ByWard Market in two hours at $125. Three more walk between tastings rather than between buildings.

Which shape you want is usually decided by how long you have. An Ottawa city tour that has to fit into a lunch break is the flight; one that has a morning is a walk; one that has a whole day is the wine and cider trip into the Ottawa Valley at $126.

People search for an Ottawa city tour by land and water because the capital reads as a water city: the Ottawa River splits it from Gatineau, the Rideau Canal cuts through the middle of it, and the locks drop from Parliament Hill to the river in a flight of steps.

One listing sits outside Ottawa altogether and it is worth saying plainly. The 1000 Islands scenic flight at $90 takes off in Gananoque, about a hundred kilometres south, and flies over the Ivy Lea Bridge, Boldt Castle and Singer Castle with ten, twenty, thirty or sixty minutes to choose from. It carries 486 reviews at 4.9, more than any other listing on this site, and it is the best-reviewed thing here — but it is a day out from Ottawa, not an Ottawa city tour.

Meeting points are the detail people get wrong, and on this site they fall into three groups.

The flight over the city lifts off in Gatineau, on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River and directly across the water from downtown. That is a short hop from the centre, and it is the reason the fifteen minutes cover the Hill, the river and Gatineau Park without wasting any of them getting into position. The fall colours flight at $205 is listed in Ottawa itself and runs ten to forty-five minutes over Gatineau Park, with a private option and a request to book at least three hours ahead.

The guided walks start downtown, around Parliament Hill, ByWard Market and Lower Town, and they finish within a few streets of where they began. A guided walk here is therefore easy to fit around a hotel in the centre: two hours out, and you are back where you started.

Two listings come to you. The Parliament Hill and river parkway tour at $85 and the Lansdowne and Bank Street tour at $196 both include pick-up, which is what makes them the easiest version of an Ottawa city tour if you are staying outside the core or travelling with people who would rather not start the day with a walk.

The wine and cider day at $126 is the exception on both counts: seven hours, and it spends most of them out in the Ottawa Valley at a tasting room, a vineyard and a family-run cider orchard rather than in the city at all.
